A book talk with Estée Fresco, York University with opening remarks by Brittany Szczyglowski, PhD candidate in Communication & Culture and Dr. Matt Ventresca a sports, media, and science studies researcher.

Red Mitten Nationalism explores how common understandings of Canadian history and identity are shaped at the intersection of sport, commercialism and nationalism. Through case students of recent Canadian-hosted Olympic and Commonwealth Games, Fresco argues that representations of Indigenous peoples’ cultures are central to the way everyday Canadians, corporations, and sport organizations remember the past and understand the present.

Estee Fresco is an Assistant Professor in the Communication & Media Studies Department at York University. Her research specialization is in the areas of sport, Canadian culture and Indigenous-Settler relations.

Brittany Szczyglowski is a PhD candidate in Communication & Culture. Her current research examines consumer culture, sport media and contemporary activism.

Dr. Matt Ventresca investigates the cultural politics of traumatic brain injuries and painkilling drugs in sports. His work is supported by Queen’s University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Australian National University.
