Each year IRDL hosts an open house, a speaker series, cross-departmental collaborative events, and supportive writing groups for graduate students and faculty members.
We are committed to providing space and support for research development and dissemination.
The theme of the 11th Child and Teen Consumption Conference is Playing with Borders. The borders and boundaries of young people’s cultural worlds are messy and in flux, especially in the spaces of consumer culture, digital culture and media culture. From the borders between the analog and the digital, the authentic and the branded, the global and the local, play and labour to, food and fun, young people contest, resist, negotiate, push and play with the boundaries in the between. We invite research and approaches that interrogate the concepts and definition of children’s and teen’s “play”, and how young people themselves “play” in mediated and digitized spaces. |
Dr. Gray will explore the intersection of gaming and social media. From #NPC to #Skibidi, digital cultures have immersed themselves into gaming in dynamic ways. These cultural expressions provide a way to explore convergence inside the spaces that young folks occupy within the transmediated spaces of gaming. Drawing from ethnographic observations of gamers and games, this presentation will engage the realities of what gaming and streaming can look like.
