This talk examines the cultural politics of transcultural fandoms especially in connection to media texts. Ganzon explores the legacy of negotiated readings especially when media texts travel, when fandoms cross borders, and when fans negotiate identity through media texts. The talk also covers a case study of Filipino boys’ love media to demonstrate how marginalized communities appropriate cultural texts and explore identity.

Sarah Christina Ganzon is an Assistant Professor of the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University.
