DON’T EAT THE PICTURES: Cross-media play with picture books from mobile apps to interactive museum exhibits

Dr. Hamer will present highlights from her research on the adaptation, remediation, and commodification of picture books. Framed by cross-disciplinary work on transmedia storytelling, interactivity, and critical children’s museology, this talk will explore the design of mobile story apps and interactive museum exhibitions as venues for cross-media play with picture book narratives. Dr. Hamer will focus on how transmedia storytelling and other forms of cross-media play exemplifies the opportunities and limitations of interactive and digital technologies for critical engagement with picture books.
