The changes in spatial boundaries that the inherent embeddedness of online digital technologies create is a methodological challenge for ethnographic research. In this talk, I will open up the concept of ‘reverse engineering’ the role of school platforms in educational practices by problematizing the integration of digital methods and more traditional ethnographic methods to study platform use in situ.

Fredrik Rusk (fredrik.rusk@abo.fi), Associate Professor of Education, Department of Education, Åbo Akademi, Finland
His research involves ethnographic and ethnomethodological studies using diverse data (incl video and screen recordings) to critically analyse social organization, identity, culture and learning from participants’ perspectives both in- and outside of the classroom/school, and in-and-through diverse digitalized interaction. He is currently leading, e.g., a project titled “Platformization of teaching and school: Case Wilma” on how contemporary school life in Finland is affected by the use of a school platform (Wilma) from a teacher and school perspective.

Immediately following: In-person lecture “Platform Power in Finnish Schooling” at 2:30-4:30 in CMDS 2200.
